Tim wise the author of "white like Me" and an anti-racism advocate made a video to explain what society is blind too. Mr. wise began with expressing that in class when he was young experienced separation and mistreatment of blacks and whites . He never even when he was little that was wrong. When he grew up he fought for equality and he did so in college.
What is white privilege?
Its where whites are given advantages in society and in the community. In the video Tim wise interview college students and asked "what is to be white?". Almost all students had no idea what to say. Mr.wise explained that of course white students or whites alone don't know what that means or what to say because we are a privileged race.
In the United States, congress and the President had secretly made bargains with the laws made in congress. In the GI bill African Americans were not provided like whites and in all bills or laws they benefit whites and not blacks.
Mr.Wise Continued interviews. One man in the interview stated that he one time stole something from a store and he thought that since he was white he had the advantage. What have we taught our children ?
In 2008, Obama, an African American man was elected President of the United States. The African Americans rejoiced and were hoping that maybe just maybe change would happen.Question is what does this mean? Did this mean racism is demolished? Does anything change and barriers change?
Even though he was elected change did not happen. News channels televised how this was in fact true. One man was asked " Why would you vote for McCain if your a democrat?" He replied " I would never vote for a black man."
Today racial inequality still exists and probable will always be. But the question I leave with you is what can we do to make changes and what can we do to make things equal even when meet with resistance? .
